Easy How To Make Rustic Stars -For Unique Decor
Create a rustic star wall decoration using wire coat hangers, denim, and burlap scraps. A simple and charming DIY project perfect for adding a cosy touch to your home decor.

My favourite kind of craft has two key elements. One, it is free or almost free, as it uses stuff you already have or involves recycling. Two, it is sweet and simple. Well, I can safely say that these gorgeous rustic stars tick both these boxes.
I tend to associate stars with Christmas, and these rustic stars would make a lovely addition to my Christmas decorations.
However, as they are not in the traditional colours associated with Christmas decorations, they wouldn't look out of place at other times of the year.
You can hang them on the walls or the mantle or make a big one as a wreath on the door.

What You Need to Make Upcycled Denim Rustic Stars
- Galvanized steel wire about the same thickness as wire coat hangers.
- Wire cutters/pliers
- Mod Podge
- Nails, hammer, and a large piece of scrap wood
- Printed five-pointed star template - Just do a google search and print one to the size you would like your rustic stars to be
- Denim scraps from old jeans.
- Burlap scraps
How To Make The Stars
Step 1: First, make a wireframe for the stars. To do this, place the five-star template on top of a scrap piece of wood (I used an old cabinet door).
Then hammer in a nail at every point and indentation of the star (10 nails).
Step 2: Wrap the galvanized wire around each nail to form a star shape. Secure the wire with a twist at the end, using the pliers and cut off the end.
Step 3: Cut the denim scraps and burlap them into long strips. The strips can be as long as you like, but they need to be about 2cm (nearly 1") long.
The legs of old jeans work well for getting long strips of denim. You can make the stars in just one shade of indigo using denim from the same pair of jeans. For a striped look, use the denim from jeans in different shades of indigo.
You can cut or tear the jeans into strips; don't worry about frayed edges; they add to the overall look.
Step 4: Next, wrap the fabric strips around the wireframe, securing them with Mod Podge.
The number of layers of fabric you use depends on how thick you want your stars. I used two layers of material for my rustic stars. When wrapping the fabric, hold the final strip in place with a pin while the glue dries.
Displaying The Stars
I love the combination of burlap and denim with these star decorations. They look great hanging together from a branch. For a more festive look, you could use scrap fabric in more traditional Christmas colours.
The upcycled star decorations can easily be made in any size you like. You only need to use a different star template in your desired size. I've also made an upcycled denim heart wreath similar to these stars.
