How to Make Denim Bluebells from Old Jeans

Turn old jeans into simple denim bluebells with this easy upcycled craft. Using small fabric scraps and minimal sewing, you can make these spring flowers quickly and without much fuss, ideal for decorating or gifting.

Every spring, I look forward to spotting carpets of bluebells in my local woods. It’s one of those beautiful moments when you know spring has finally arrived after a long, grey winter. Naturally, I can’t just enjoy them and move on. Instead, I come home, look at a pile of old jeans, and think that they could probably be turned into something botanical. And so these denim bluebells came about.

They’re actually a particularly apt choice for denim. Bluebells are blue, so this is one of the rare occasions where old jeans are the perfect choice for upcycled fabric flowers.

These denim bluebells aren’t my first denim flower creations. If you follow me, you’ll know I love turning old jeans into botanical blooms. Here are some other examples you can check out.

The good news is these bluebells are probably the least demanding of the lot. They use the smallest scraps, require very little sewing, and come together without much fuss. They are so fun to make that it wouldn’t take long to create a bunch of denim bluebells that will last all year long and not just for a fleeting few weeks each spring.

denim scraps, fabric stiffner, needle and thread and floristry wire to make denim bluebells.
  • Small denim scraps (a mix of shades works well)
  • Needle and thread – There is only a tiny bit of sewing; glue could be used instead.
  • Fabric stiffener – This stiffens the denim, helping the petals curl.
  • Floral wire – For the bluebell stems
  • Fibre fill (a very small amount) – I use filling from old pillows
  • Scissors
  • White glue

How To Make Denim Bluebells

Step 1: Cut the Denim Petal Shape: Start by cutting a small rectangle (5cm x 8cm), a double-leaf shape and a circle of denim (5cm diameter), using the template above. I used a darker shade of denim for these pieces.

Step 2: Fold the small rectangle of denim into five concertina-style sections. Trim the top edge into a rounded petal shape.

Step 3: Unfold the denim rectangle to reveal something resembling a slightly softened picket fence. Apply a little fabric stiffener to the petal tips so they can be gently curled back and hold their shape as the stiffener dries.

Step 4: Create the Flower Tube. Once dry, roll the rectangle into a tube and stitch down the side to hold it in place.

Step 5: Make the Centre (Fabric Yo-Yo): Sew one long running stitch around the edge of the denim round. Then pull it tight to form a fabric yo-yo. Add a little fibre fill, then stitch it closed into a fabric ball. Then place this into the denim flower tube you’ve just made.

Step 6. Form the Bell Shape: Gather and stitch the base of the flower closed. This gives you that lovely drooping bluebell shape.

Step 7. Add Stem & Small Leaf: Punch a small hole in the middle of the double leaf and thread it through the floral wire. Stick the end of the floral wire into the flower base (secure with glue). Then wrap the wire with lighter denim to form a stem.

Step 8. Assemble the Bluebell Stem: Make 3 to 4 bell flowers and twist the stems together. Gently bend the flowers for a natural droop. Then add a long leaf along the stem and wrap with lighter denim to finish.

Tips for More Realistic Bluebells

  • Use soft, worn denim for better shaping
  • Mix shades for depth
  • Keep them slightly imperfect (nature isn’t neat!)
  • Angle each flower differently

Conclusion

These denim bluebells are one of those crafts that tick all the boxes: easy, satisfying, and a great way to use up even the tiniest fabric scraps. Check out this great collection of fabric flower ideas, many of which can also be made with denim scraps.

They also look right at home alongside the rest of my slightly quirky denim creations. If you fancy expanding your denim nature collection even further, you might also enjoy my denim moths; they look great as a specimen wall display. Denim mushrooms are very cute, and my denim feathers are probably my most popular upcycled denim craft.
